Langdon is trying to follow the Path of Illumination which leads him to the four elements, and to some dead cardinals. They are assisted by both the Swiss Guard and Pope’s second in command. Joined by an Italian physicist, Vittoria Vetra, who is the adopted daughter to the man that was just killed, Langdon is on a race through crypts, cathedrals, and most of Vatican City trying to locate the bomb, and the missing cardinals.
